Driving disqualifications mutually recognised in Ireland and UK
Years of political wrangling and deal-making have finally resulted in a deal whereby drivers who are disqualified in Britain and Northern Ireland will have their disqualifications recognised and enforced on their return to Ireland, and vice versa for UK drivers banned here.
The new agreement between the Irish, British and Northern Ireland governments will come into force in February 2010.
This is the first agreement of its kind to be drawn up under the terms of the 1998 European Convention on driving disqualifications.
Road safety advocates on both sides of the border have welcomed the initiative.
