| Criminal Courts complex opened |
The new Criminal Courts of Justice complex near Dublin’s Phoenix Park heard its first cases in early December, having been completed several months ahead of schedule.
The new complex has 450 rooms, including 22 courtrooms over 10 floors, and will provide vastly improved facilities for the public, legal practitioners, jurors, victims and their families. It will also provide a central holding facility for people in custody.
The Courts and Court Officers Bill 2009 was published in August 2009 to facilitate new and more efficient procedures in this new facility.
This Bill will allow new custody arrangements at the new complex, with detainees managed by the Irish Prison Service instead of An Garda Síochána, thus streamlining the system and avoiding unnecessary expense. |
